Fiber Optic Cable Standards: IEC 60794, ITU-T G.652D and YD/T
Why Standards Matter on a Purchase Order
Two cables can look identical on a drum and perform differently for twenty years. The difference is which optical fiber cable standards the fiber and the finished cable were qualified against. If your purchase order names the standard, every quality dispute has an objective referee.
The Two Layers of Standards
Fiber standards describe the glass. Cable standards describe the finished assembly — mechanical, environmental and test methods. A compliant product must satisfy both.
ITU-T Fiber Recommendations
- ITU-T G.652D. The default single mode fiber for access, metro and long haul. Low water peak makes it usable across 1260–1625 nm, including the 1383 nm band. If your specification says nothing else, it means G.652D.
- ITU-T G.657.A1 / A2. Bend-insensitive fiber for FTTH drop cables and tight indoor routing. A2 tolerates the smallest bend radius and is standard in butterfly drop cable; it remains fully compatible with G.652D at the splice.
- ITU-T G.651.1. Multimode fiber for short-reach data centre links, paired with OM3, OM4 or OM5 bandwidth grades.
IEC 60794 Cable Standards
IEC 60794 is the international family covering optical fibre cables. The parts most quoted on purchase orders are:
| IEC 60794 part | Covers | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 60794-1-1 | General specification | Framework definitions |
| 60794-1-2 | Basic test procedures | Tensile, crush, bend, temperature cycling |
| 60794-3 | Outdoor cables | Duct, buried and aerial cable |
| 60794-4 | Aerial cables along power lines | ADSS and OPGW |
Regional and Application Standards
- YD/T series. Chinese telecom industry standards widely referenced in Asia and accepted by many export buyers.
- RoHS and REACH. Substance restrictions on jacket and filling compounds. Essential for European projects.
- ADSS and OPGW. Aerial and power-line cables are qualified against IEEE 1222 and relevant IEC 60794-4 requirements, including AEHF sheath for high-field routes.
How to Read a Datasheet
A complete fiber optic cable specification states: fiber type and standard, attenuation at 1310/1550 nm, cable diameter, weight, tensile strength (short and long term), crush resistance, bend radius and operating temperature range. If any of these is missing, the datasheet is a marketing sheet, not a specification.
Huifiber cables are tested to IEC 60794 and use ITU-T G.652D or G.657 fiber from tier-one suppliers. Every reel ships with its individual test report. Download our datasheets and catalog, or ask our engineers which standard applies to your route.
